What are we hatching in K?

If you haven't heard yet you just aren't in the kindergarten loop.  We are incubating eggs and preparing for them to hatch on Monday.  Mrs. Jackie Steffen delivered the eggs on March 24th and we have been counting down the days for them to hatch.  Here are some of the pictures of when she came to deliver the eggs and taught the kids all about the incubation process and the parts of the egg.  She came back on Tuesday to do egg candling with us which was awesome.   We had to go in the girls bathroom so that we had a dark room to see what was happening inside each egg.  The kids had to decide whether each egg was a winner, a quitter, or a yolker.  Out of 24 eggs we had 12 winners and we will wait and see if they hatch.

This was fun!  We'll see how they turn out!

In December, before we left for Christmas break, we decorated Gingerbread houses.  The Kindergarten students were elated and had a blast!

The 100th Day of School!  We are adding the 100th popsicle stick to our coutning the days chart.  We had to bundle up our 9 groups of 10 to make 1 big group of 100!

We are practicing counting to 100 by singing and dancing to our "Zero the Hero" song.  We sing this song every time we read a number with a zero.

 

We made 100 headbands to show that we are 100 days smarter.  We used dot markers to make 10 dots on 10 strips of paper, and then glued them on a headband.

 

We learned about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and how he was a hero.  We talked about courage and treating people how we would want to be treated.  We made this craft and wrote what our dreams are that would make the world a better place.

I have a dream people would be kind.

 

I have a dream people can work together.

And here we are in all of our craziness, with our 100 day hats on.

 

The Kindergartens worked on a snowman glyph.  They made their snowman by answering the questions on the chart.  We then took upon the task of analyzing our data and worked together as a glass to graph the results of each question in the glyph.  That was a bit of work!

 

One of my goals in math this year is to get the kids thinking about numbers and really understand what they mean and why we use the numerals we do to make each number.  Here I called out how many tens and ones to build.  One partner would build the number and the other partner had to write what the number would be.  This is a challenge for this age but something we really need to keep working on.

The 3rd and 4th grade teacher Mrs. Davey asked us if we would like to make Valentine's for the troops.  Her daughter is currently in basic training for the Army in Fort Jackson, South Carolina.

Part of my Valentine's treats for the kiddos were candy hearts that we used to to candy heart math.  We used the skills of estimation, sorting, counting, graphing, and comparing (oh, and eating!)

Another project we did for Valentine's day was to make our own Valentine bags.  The kids got to pick between a bunny, frog, and bear, and follow the directions to make their Valentine.
